On Wednesday, Universal Pictures released the trailer for Wicked: For Good, the second installment of the film adaptation of the hit musical Wicked. This is the first extended look at the movie that covers the second half of the stage musical. Wicked: For Good is set for release on November 21, 2025, and it returns Ariana Grande to her role as Glinda, opposite stage and screen darling Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba.
The pair made a massive splash as the stars of Wicked, lauded for their chemistry as vocalists and actors alike. While Grande presented as a polished, wafer-thin, impossibly blonde version of Glinda, Erivo brought her Blackness into the green-skinned, outcast character of Elphaba. The new film will pick up the story where the first movie (titled as Wicked: Part One on screen) left off — with Elphaba riding her broom into the Western sky after Glinda chooses to stay in Oz with Elphaba’s oppressors, rather than joining her friend.
For those who just have to see the trailer in a theater — or more likely, are just ready for another Wicked viewing — Universal Pictures is bringing the movie back into theaters on June 4 for one-night-only special screenings where the trailer will be featured.
Unlike almost everyone else who viewed today’s trailer looking for hints at how the story will be represented, I have absolutely no clue what’ll happen in Wicked: For Good. I’ve somehow avoided spoilers, other than the obvious spoilers I already know from watching The Wizard of Oz as a kid. I haven’t seen the Broadway play, nor have I read the Gregory Maguire book Wicked is based on. I don’t even know what the songs are! (I’ve been told, however, that no one knows them all, because Wicked lyricist and composer Stephen Schwartz has written new songs just for the movie version.)
So while you might see that [spoiler thing] and think [spoiler thing is happening], I’m flying into this totally uninitiated, with only the context of the first film to go on. Do we think I can avoid spoilers until the film actually comes out in November? Oh, there’s Dorothy…
