Sometimes there is nothing more fun than loving a villain, and now Honkai: Star Rail will give fans the opportunity to do just that. Developer Hoyoverse released new marketing on Tuesday confirming that Sunday, the ambitious antagonist of the Penacony storyline, will be coming to the game as a playable character. Now fans who have been anticipating his release for the better part of a year are celebrating his triumphant return with memes, fan art, and general excitement.
The official Honkai: Star Rail account shared more details on the upcoming character. Sunday will be a 5-star Imaginary character that follows the path of the Harmony. This makes him the first male character in the game to follow the path of the Harmony and give some much-needed buffs to other characters. We don’t have details beyond this post, but his splash art looks stunning and brings out a godlike, celestial side to the character.
Sunday was first introduced to Honkai: Star Rail as an NPC in the 2.0 version of the game. The 2.0 patch launched back in February 2024, so he’s been a part of the cast for the better part of a year. Since his appearance, Sunday’s superfans have been waiting on each update with baited breath in the hope that he would become playable. However, the developers really made players wait, and some even lost hope when recent events in the main storyline took members of the Astral Express back to the The Xianzhou Luofu. But, as of today, he’s back — and fans couldn’t be more thrilled.
Fans replied to the official announcement in complete awe and excitement. Shoto, a popular Vtuber, replied with the simple exclamation “HE’S REAL,” and more than 8,600 people liked it. Another person tweeted, “IT MAY BE A TUESDAY BUT IT SURE FEELS LIKE SUNDAY,” in reference to his name.
Sunday has a sister named Robin in the game. She’s already a playable character, so people celebrated that the two would finally be reunited and playable.
Others celebrated by creating memes using his character art. The image below imagines Sunday scoring a slam dunk as he reaches up into the sky.
Others shared gorgeous fan art of the character.
We don’t have a confirmed date for when Sunday will be released. However, based on how Hoyoverse has handled character releases in the past, the timing of the announcement means he will likely launch as a playable character in the 2.7 patch. So if you’re one of those sickos who has been hoarding Star Rail Special Passes for months on end , your time to shine will finally come.
